# I have five profiles and five gateways running. Can one process serve all of them? What do I lose?

**In one sentence:** yes. `hermes config set gateway.multiplex_profiles true` **on the default profile** (it owns the multiplexer) and restart its gateway. It is opt-in and off by default. You lose process-level isolation (shared crash domain, no restarting one profile without touching the others) and you gain one PID, one lock, and a single thing to monitor. Credentials are **not** shared.

## The trap in this question

**If you already run this:** turning the flag on in a secondary profile. It belongs to the DEFAULT profile, which owns the multiplexer. Second trap: keeping a webhook configured on a secondary profile after enabling multiplexing. That does not bring the gateway down, it **skips the entire profile** with a warning while the others stay healthy, so the symptom is one mute profile and nothing obviously broken. Third: writing `profile_routes` with multiplexing off. The routes are simply ignored, with no error.
